Indian Premier League is one of the most prominent cricketing events in the world that is organized by the BCCI, the governing body of Indian cricket, every year. The first edition of IPL was launched in 2008 and Rajasthan Royals was the first winner of the tournament. Prior to the scheduled IPL 22, the cricket governing body of India, BCCI presented two additional teams in the tournament i.e, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans which will leverage the excitement among the cricket lovers. So, there will be a total of 10 franchises that will participate in this 2022 season of IPL.
IPL 22 Dates
The celebration of the IPL 22 will begin on 26 March 2022 and will conclude on 29 May 2022. and there will be 74 matches. Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders faced each other in the final of IPL 2021, so the inaugural match will be played between CSK and KKR on 26 March 2022.
IPL 2022 Venues
All the matches will be contested at the 4 international grade stadiums of Pune and Mumbai, Maharashtra. Wankhede and DY Patil Stadium of Mumbai will conduct 40 league matches while Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium will host the remaining matches.
The capacity of all four stadiums is mentioned below:
- Wankhede Stadium: 33,108
- DY Patil Stadium: 55,000.
- Brabourne Stadium: 20,000
- MCA International Stadium: 37,000
According to the authority of Maharashtra, only 25% of the audience will be permitted in the stadium to enjoy the tournament in IPL 2022.
IPL 2022 Teams
There are 10 teams who will compete with each other to secure a place in the top 4 positions in order to qualify for the playoff. The name and other details of the IPL squads are mentioned below:
Chennai Super Kings: Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain of the CSK from the beginning of the IPL and he will again lead Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2022 under the guidance of Stephen Fleming as a head coach. This edition of the IPL will be the last season for MS Dhoni as he will retire after IPL 22. After Mumbai Indians, CSK comes at the 2nd position for achieving the most wins in the IPL, they have lifted the title 4 times in the years 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021. CSK holds the record of appearing the most times in the playoffs and finals in the history of the Indian Premier League.
Mumbai Indians: The Mumbai Indians will compete in the IPL 2022 under Rohit Sharma's leadership, with Mahela Jayawardene as the head coach. Mukesh Ambani's side has won the IPL five times, proving that they are the most successful squad of the IPL. Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav have all been recalled by the franchise.
Delhi Capitals: Under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals will compete in the IPL 2022, hoping to win their maiden title. The Delhi Capitals were previously known as the Delhi Daredevils, but in 2019 they were rebranded as the Delhi Capitals. Ricky Ponting will lead the group as head coach, with Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson serving as assistant coaches. The team's official ownership is in the hands of Kiran Kumar Grandhi and Parth Jindal. The team will play their first match of the IPL 2022 against Mumbai Indians at Brabourne – CCI on 27 March 2022.
Kolkata Knight Riders: The Kolkata Knight Riders will appear in the IPL 2022, with Shreyas Iyer as captain and Brendon McCullum as head coach. Andre Russell, Varun Chakaravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, and Sunil Narine are among the players that have been retained by the club. They've won the IPL twice, the first in 2012 and the second in 2014. They also made it to the finals in the previous season, finishing as runners-up.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: The Royal Challengers Bangalore will engage in the IPL 2022 under the direction of Faf du Plessis as a captain, with Sanjay Bangar as head coach. In IPL 2022, the franchise has opted to keep Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammad Siraj. RCB has never won their first title before, and they will be hoping to do so this time. The team is owned by United Spirits Limited and Mike Hesson is the director of cricket operations.
Punjab Kings: Punjab Kings will compete in the IPL 2022 season, with Mayank Agrawal as captain and Anil Kumble as head coach. Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh were retained by the franchise. With a value of 11.5 crores, Liam Livingstone is the most expensive player for Punjab. The Punjab Kings are owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul, with Satish Menon serving as the CEO.
Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson, a wicket-keeper batsman, will lead Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022, he is one of the successful batters of RR in the last IPL in 2021 with 484 runs. Kumar Sangakkara will lead the team as a head coach in IPL 2022. Apart from Samson, the franchise decided to keep Jos Buttler and Yashashvi Jaiswal. Rajasthan Royals will play their first match of the IPL 2022 season against Sunrisers Hyderabad at MCA Stadium, Pune on 29 March 2022.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Kane Williamson, a New Zealand captain, will be the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2022 season, which will be coached by Tom Moody. Sunrisers Hyderabad is owned by Kalanithi Maran (Sun Network), and its CEO is K Shanmugam. The franchise has agreed to keep three players: Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik.
Gujarat Titans: Gujarat Titans will participate in the IPL in 2022, led by Hardik Pandya and coached by Ashish Nehra. The franchise is financed by Steve Koltes, Donald Mackenzie, and Rolly van Rappard. On March 28, 2022, the Titans will contest their debut match in the IPL 2022 season against the Lucknow Giants at Wankhede Stadium.
Lucknow Super Giants: The Lucknow Giants will be led by KL Rahul in the IPL 2022 season, with Andy Flower as head coach. The franchise is owned by Sanjiv Goenka, with Raghu Iyer as the CEO. The Lucknow Giants are a new entry for IPL 2022, with Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, and Krunal Pandya among the prominent players.
