The One Day International
series between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan
was a vital one for the home team. It was a series which the home team needed to win to prove their worth in the field of cricket. The series was a highlight one as this was a series played in the homeland of Zimbabwe after a long time. The series included four matches that were played in the famous Bulawayo stadium.
The
first match
of the series saw Afghanistan bat first after losing the toss. Noor Ali Zadran scored 43 runs as the opener. Samiullah Shenwari was the top scorer for the visiting team scoring 65 runs. He got a good support in the middle order from Mohammad Nabi who scored 54 runs. Their partnership took the team to a total of 223 runs in 50 overs. Tendai Chatara and Donald Tiripano took 2 wickets each for the home team. Zimbabwe started off their chase pretty well. The top order of the team performed well as Sikandar Raza the opener scored 42 runs and was unbeaten he got a good support from Brendan Taylor scoring 43 runs. The top scorer of the match was Sean Williams who scored 70 runs thus taking the team cross the required total in just 46th over of the 2nd innings. With this win the home side led the series by 1-0.
The
second match
yet again saw Afghanistan batting first after losing the toss. Usman Ghani the opener was the top scorer for the team scoring 118 runs. The whole team contributed with scoring 20 odd runs and hence the visitors were able to score 256 runs by the end of 50 overs. Sikandar Raza Hamilton Masakadza and Tinashe Panyangara took 2 wickets each. In this match the home side dominated the play. The opening pair of Hamilton Masakadza and Sikandar Raza had a partnership of 224 runs in just 37 overs. This was a match changing partnership as it brought the home side near the winning total. Masakadza scored 93 runs while Raza played a knock of 141. The team was able to reach the required score in just 44 overs. Now the home side led the series by 2-0 and needed a single win to register a series win.
The
third match
saw some change of fortunes. The home side this time was batting first after losing the toss. Hamilton Masakadza continued from where he left in the previous match and scored 84 runs. Brendon Taylor scored 53 runs and Sean Williams scored 49 runs. Once the home side was running away with the game and visitors then came back taking wickets and thus stopping the run flow. The home side posted a score of 261 runs. Dawlat Zadran and Aftab Alam took 2 wickets each for the visitors. The visitors got a good solid start from the opening pair who scored 83 runs for the 1st wicket. Javed Ahmadi scored 56 runs while Usman Ghani played an innings of 43runs. Samiullah Shenwari scored 41 runs. Later Mohammad Nabi made an important contribution of 42 runs and thus reached the required total with 2 balls to spare. With this win the series now stood at 2-1 for the home side.
The
final match
of the series saw Afghanistan bat first after losing the toss. The top scorer of the innings Shafiqullah he played 56 runs. Mohammad Nabi scored 37 runs while Samiullah Shenwari 40 runs. The visitors scored 259 runs in the 1st innings. Donald Tiripano was the best bowler for the home side taking 5 wickets. It seemed that the match will be a cake walk for the home side but the Afghan pacers made life hell for the home side. They bowled the home side in a score of 159 runs. Sharafuddin Ashraf took 3 wickets for his side. With this win the visitors levelled the series 2-2 after going down by 2-0. Sikandar Raza won the man of the series award.
