Organized by the West Indies cricket board, CPL (Biggest Party in sport) is one of the most watched games in the shortest format of cricket. Since its inauguration in 2013, it has grown tremendously and left a special place in the hearts of cricket lovers. In 2022, cricket fans all over the world will watch the 10th edition of the Caribbean Premier League which will commence at the end of August and conclude at the end of September. There will be 6 participating T20 franchises that will play against each other in two rounds. The first round will be a group stage and the second will be a play-off round where each team will play 9 T20 in the group stage then the play-off will be held among the top 4 teams. Hero Motocorp, one of the largest producers of two-wheeler vehicles, will keep going to represent the Caribbean Premier League in 2022.
In the last session of CPL in 2021, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Saint Lucia created a teeth -biting environment in the final of CPL, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots defeated Saint Lucia in the last ball of the game and lifted the title for the first time.
Venues
All the T20 matches of the CPL will be fought in four different venues i.e, Guyana, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The first 7 T20 matches of the CPL 2022 will be fought from 31st Aug to 4th Sep 2022 in Warner Park Sporting Complex, Basseterre situated in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The next 8 T20 matches will be held from 7th Sep to 11th Sep 2022 at Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, Gros Islet which is located in Saint Lucia.
From 13th Sep to 18th Sep, the Queen's Park, Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago will host the next 8 T20s of the CPL 2022.
The rest of the 11 T20s including playoffs and finals will be played from 13th Sep to 30th Sep 2022 in Providence Stadium, Providence, or Guyana National Stadium in Guyana.
Teams and Winners of CPL
Barbados Royals
The Barbados Royals, one of the six teams that participate in the CPL every year, came into existence in 2013. Barbados Royals, the co-founder of Blenheim Chalcot, is an Indian businessman who holds the ownership of Barbados Royals. The team got Jason Holder as a captain and Trevor Penney as a head coach. Jason Holder is a right-arm medium pacer who can bat also and has also served the West Indies cricket team as a captain. In the history of CPL since 2013, Barbados has lifted the title in 2014 and 2019 by beating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the finals of 2014 and 2019. The team performs their home matches at Kensington Oval stadium which is situated in the west region of Bridgetown.
Guyana Amazon Warriors
Guyana Amazon Warriors, one of the six teams that take part in the Caribbean Premier League every year, is currently owned by Dr. Rajisanghi Ramroop. GAW holds the record of reaching the final of CPL most times, they have successfully made their place in the final 5 times but have never been able to lift the title of CPL.
The captain of the GAW is yet to be declared but Rayon Griffith will retain the position of head coach. Since 2013, the GAW is the team who made their place in the Playoff every season and became runners-up 5 times. Guyana National Stadium is their home ground with the capacity of 20000 audiences to take in. Lendl Simmons who served GAW from 2013-2015 is the leading scorer and Imran Tahir is the highest wicket-taker of GAW.
Jamaica Tallawahs
Jamaica Tallawahs is owned by Kris Persaud and it is the team who won the inaugural season of the CPL in 2013. Since 2013, the team has lifted the title in 2013 and 2016 by defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors both times. Jamaica Tallawahs will enter the tournament in 2022 under the leadership of Rovman Powell and coach Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Sabina Park and Central Broward Regional Park with a capacity of 15,600 is the stadium where the Tallawahs contest their home matches. They hold a notable record of including all the 11 local players in a T20 against TT Red Steel in the inaugural season of CPL. Chris Gayle who played for Jamaica from 2013-2019 is the leading run maker whereas Andre Russell is the highest wicket-taker.
St Kitts & Nevis Patriots
St Kitts & Nevis Patriots represent Saint Kitts and Nevis was founded in 2015 and is owned by Winning Willows Limited. Dwayne Bravo is the captain of the Patriots along with Simon Helmet as a head coach. Warner Park, Basseterre is the home ground of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots with a capacity of 10,000. The team won the title of CPL for the first time in 2021 by defeating St Lucia Kings by 3 wickets. Since 2015, Evin Lewis is serving the Patriots and became the highest run maker for his team, on the other hand, Sheldon Cottrell is the highest wicket-taker.
Saint Lucia Kings
Saint Lucia Kings is one of the six teams who has been contesting in the tournament for 9 years but have never been able to win the title. The Kings was owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul. Preity Zinta is an Indian film actress, Mohit is currently holding the position of managing director in Elephant Capitals plc, Karan Paul is the chairperson of Apeejay Surrendra Group, and Ness Wadia is managing director of Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation.
Rawl Lewis holds the position of team manager whereas Daren Sammy, the former captain of West Indies, is the head coach of the Kings. Andre Fletcher is sitting at the top position for making the most runs and Kesrick Williams is the leading wicket-taker for Saint Lucia Kings. The Kings are also known by their old names i.e, St Lucia Stars and St Lucia Zouks. The captain for the Kings is yet to be declared.
Trinbago Knight Riders
Trinbago Knight Riders franchise is the most successful franchise in the Caribbean Premier League with 4 CPL titles in their hand. They have done this feat in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2020. The team is owned by the Knight Riders Group which is also the owner of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. Venky Mysore is the CEO and Imran Jan is the head coach of the Riders.
When the Riders were founded they were known by the name Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel but later with the entry of Knight Riders Group, their name was changed to Trinbago Knight Riders. Kieron Pollard, one of the most dominating players of the West Indies, holds the position of captain for the Riders.
In 2015, Trinbago Knight Riders became the CPL champion for the first time by defeating Barbados Royals by 20 runs. Then they repeated history by winning the CPL title in 2017 where they defeated St Kitts & Nevis Patriots by 3 wickets. Following that, they lifted the title in 2018 by defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 8 wickets. Afterward, in 2020, they became the CPL champion by defeating Saint Lucia Kings. Colin Munro is the leading scorer and Dwayne is the leading wicket-taker for the Riders.
