BPL 2023

The BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) is a highly qualified cricket league in the shortest game format organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The league is conducted in an effort to seek fresh young talents of Bangladesh in cricket. The BPL 2023 will be the 9th edition of the BPL which will kick off their journey in the month of January 2023. The league will run for more than one month i.e, from Jan 5 to Feb 16 in 2023.

There will be a total of 7 teams playing 46 games with each other in the BPL 2023. Rangpur Riders, who had been absent for two seasons, will make a comeback in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League 2023. BPL Winners List From 2016 to 2022

Here is the list of the winners of the Bangladesh Premier League since its beginnings:

1. In 2012 (Dhaka Gladiators)

In 2012, Dhaka Gladiators and Barisal Burners faced each other in the final competition of BPL 2012. Dhaka Gladiators lifted the title after defeating Barisal Burners by 8 wickets. Shakib Al Hasan was named Player of the tournament in the opening season of BPL.

2. In 2013 (Dhaka Gladiators)

In 2013, Dhaka Gladiators again reached the final where they faced Chittagong Kings. While batting first, the gladiators added a score of 172/9 but Chittagong Kings could not perform well and the entire team was demolished at 123 runs only, thus Dhaka Gladiator won the title again by 43 runs, and Shakib Al Hasan was again named Player of the Tournament. 

3. In 2015 (Comilla Victorians)

Six clubs participated in the BPL 2015, and Comilla Victorians achieved their first championship by defeating Barisal Bulls in the final competition. 

4. In 2016 (Dhaka Dynamites)

In 2016, the BPL trophy was lifted by Dhaka Dynamites after defeating Rajshahi Kings in the final competition whereas Mahmudullah Riyad who came from Mahmudullah Riyad was named Player of the Tournament. 

5. In 2017 (Rangpur Riders)

Rangpur Rider reached the finals for the first time and lifted the BPL trophy for the very first time. In the final competition, the Riders added 206/1 on the scoreboard, then in reply, Dhaka Dynamites could make 149 and thus lost the final by 57 runs. Chris Gayle was named player of the tournament in BPL 2017. 

6. In 2019 (Comilla Victorians)

In the 2019 season of BPL, the Victorians lifted the BPL trophy for the second time in the history of BPL by defeating Dhaka Dynamites and Shakib Al Hasan was named player of the tournament for the third time.

7. In 2020 (Rajshahi Royals)

Rajshahi Royals reached the final in BPL 2020 where they faced Khulna Tigers. Rajshahi Royals chose to bat first and added 170 runs on the scoreboard. In reply, Khulna Tiger could not perform well and made only 149 runs, thus losing the match by 21 runs. Andre Russell was named the player of the tournament in BPL 2020.

BPL 2023 Venue

The three venues were selected by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to conduct the entire match of the BPL 2023 and they are mentioned below:

Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, situated in the port city of Chattogram, has a capacity of 20,000 spectators. 

Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, situated in Mirpur, also known as Mirpur stadium has a capacity of 26,000 people to take in.

Sylhet International Cricket Stadium with a capacity of 18,500 is located in Sylhet. 

BPL 2023 Teams

There is a total number of 7 teams that will compete with each other in the Bangladesh Premier League and all of them are mentioned below:

1. Chattogram Challengers 

Chattogram Challengers, formerly known as Chatoogram Kings and Vikings, is one of the leading franchises in BPL that played the final in 2013. The club is controlled by the 2019-founded AKHTAR Group, which is a subsidiary of Delta Sports Ltd. The squad had a successful season as they advanced to the BANGABANDHU BPL T20 playoffs in 2019. The team represents the cricketing spirit of Chattogram City in the tournament. The squad included numerous T20 all-stars, including Chris Gayle, Imrul Kayes, Nasir Hossain, Liam Plunkett, Lendl Simmons, Rubel Hossain, Avishka Fernando, and Mahmudullah Riyad.

Julian Wood is the head coach of the Challengers but their captain is yet to decide. Unmukt Chand from India, Ashan Priyanjan, and Vishwa Fernando from Sri Lanka, Usman Khan, and Shahnawaz Dahani from Pakistan, Max O'Dowd from the Netherlands, and Irish all-rounder Curtis Campher have been picked up by the club as foreign players.  

Since the beginning of BPL, Chattogram Challengers have never been able to lift the trophy but they gave their best in 2013 when they played the final but could not win. In 2023, the Chattogram Challengers will start their BPL journey with the first T20 against Sylhet Strikers on the 6th of January 2023. 

2. Comilla Victorians

Owned by Comilla Legends Limited, Comilla Victorians are one of the 7 teams that will compete in BPL 2023 under the captaincy of Litton Das. The team was established in 2015 and they will enter the Bangladesh Premier League 2023 under the guidance of Mohammad Salahuddin as a head coach. Comilla Victorians are the most successful team that won the title 3 times in 2015, 2019, and 2022. 

In the upcoming BPL 2023, Comilla Victorians will play their first T20 against Rangpur Riders in Mirpur on the 6th of January. The team is fully packed with experienced and talented players like Mohammad Nabi, Muhammad Rizwan, Sean Williams, Shaheen Afridi, and Mustafizur Rahman who has the capability to change the mood of the game within a moment. 

3. Dhaka Dominators

Dhaka Dominators representing the true cricketing spirit of Dhaka city is one of the teams that will take part in BPL 2023. Currently, Dhaka Dominators is officially administrated and controlled by Rupa Fabrics Limited. The team will enter the tournament under the guidance of Chaminda Vaas, a former left-handed Sri Lankas pace bowler, and the captain of the club is yet to declare. 

The team is one of the most successful teams in BPL with three-time champions in 2012, 2013, and 2016. The club has signed Ahmed Shehzad, Salman Irshad & Shan Masood from Pakistan, Usman Ghani from Afghanistan, and Chamika Karunaratne from Sri Lanka as foreign players. In 2023, the Dominators will fight their first T20 against Khulna Tigers on the 7th of January in Mirpur.

The Dhaka Dominators are hoping to get to the knockout stage with all of their strength after several relatively successful campaigns in the Bangladesh Premier League. 

4. Fortune Barisal

Fortune Barisal is another Bangladeshi T20 cricket franchise that participates in Bangladesh Premier League every year. In 2023, the squad will enter the tournament under the captaincy of Shakib Al Hasan, the skipper of the Bangladesh cricket team, who has the capability to perform with bat and ball and Nazmul Abedin Fahim will play the role of head coach. 

It was first founded in 2012 with the name Barisal Burners and then it is changed to Barisal Bulls in 2015. Now, under the ownership of Fortune Group, the squad has got a new name Fortune Barisal. The team has never been able to pick up the BPL title in the history of BPL and they have also been disqualified from the BPL season 5. Fortune Barishal will play their first match against Sylhet Strikers on the 7th of January in Mirpur. 

5. Khulna Tigers

Owned by MindTree Limited, Khulna Tigers will enter the BPL 2023 under the leadership of Tamim Iqbal along with Khaled Mahmud as a head coach. The club was first established in 2012 as Khulna Royal Bengals, then after the two seasons of BPL, its name was changed to Khulna Titans in 2016. The team was taken over by MindTree Limited in 2019 and altered its name to Khulna Tigers. 

In BPL 2023, the Tigers will kick off their journey with the first against Dhaka Dominators in Mirpur on the 7th of January. 

6. Rangpur Riders

Rangpur Riders came into existence just before the 2nd season of BPL in 2013. Owned by Bashundhara Group, Rangpur Riders will enter the Bangladesh Premier League 2023 under the captaincy of Shoaib Malik, a former Pakistan cricket and Sohel Islam will handle the responsibility of the head coach.

Rangpur Riders reached the finals of BPL in 2017 and lifted the title. In 2017,  despite a few losses, they succeeded in finishing fourth in the league round, which was barely enough to advance to the playoffs. In the final competition of BPL 2017, Chris Gayle performed very well and struck an unbeaten 146 which helped them to win the BPL title under the leadership of  Mashrafe Mortaza.

In 2023, the team will kick off their journey with the 1st T20 against Comilla Victorians in Mirpur on Jan 6. 

7. Sylhet Strikers

Sylhet Strikers came into existence in 2012 with the inaugural season of BPL and it was previously owned by Sylhet Sports Limited. Eventually, in 2022, the ownership of Sylhet Strikers was given to Future sports Bangladesh with its new name Sylhet Strikers. The team will enter the BPL 2023 under the captaincy of Mashrafe Mortaza along with Rajin Saleh as a head coach. 

The club has gone through many modifications in the name as it was started as Sylhet Royals in 2012, then Sylhet Super Stars in 2015, and again in 2017, it was altered to Sylhet Sixers. Afterward, in 2019 and 2021, the name was changed to Sylhet Thunder and Sylhet Sunrisers.
