In the early years of twenty-twenty cricket, a team losing three wickets in this format would mean low total on scoreboard and imminent defeat. But in the very first edition of the World T20 tournament itself, South African batting pair Gibbs and Kemp, entered into the record book with an unbeaten 120-run-partnership (match-winning) between them at a match against West Indies in Johannesburg.
The Bangladeshi batting pair of Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Ashraful again repeated the history in the same tournament with a brilliant 109-run stand for the third wicket against West Indies in Johannesburg. But apart from these two-century-run stands, there were no such instance for the next seven years in a row. In other words, there was no hundred run partnership for the third wicket in T20 Cricket World Cup 2009, 2010 and 2012. However, in the last edition of the T20 World Cup held in the year 2014, there were three hundred-run-partnerships for the third wicket which is a world record in itself. Until now, only five times a batting pair has succeeded in putting hundred or more run partnerships for the third wicket. The complete list is given below;
