Head To Head
Zimbabwe after hosting Australia and South Africa moved to Bangladesh in order to play a long tour against the home team. The tour started off with the test series which included 3 matches. Both the teams from the past have been fighting it hard to justify their test status in the world of cricket.
The 1st test match
of the series was played in Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. After winning the toss the Zimbabwe team decided to bat first. The openers failed to provide the team a good start though Sikandar Raza scored 51 runs while opening for the team. The middle order of the visiting team failed to score much but each player contributed in 20’s and 30’s. No player was able to convert the start and hence the team was able to score 240 runs in the 1st innings. Shakib Al Hasan was coming back from a ban and he took 6 wickets in the innings to make his presence felt. The home team too didn’t get a good start but Mominul Haque and Mahmudullah scored brilliant 53 and 63 runs. Mushfiqur Rahim too contributed in the middle scoring 64 runs. The team reached a score of 254 runs. Tinashe Panyangara took 5 wickets in the innings. In the 2nd innings the Zimbabwe team failed to perform and Brendan Taylor was the lone player to score 45 runs and take the score to 114 runs in the innings. Taijul Islam took 8 wickets in the innings for the team. Bangladesh needed 101 runs and after losing 7 wickets the team was able to score the required run and thus won the 1st test comfortably.
The 2nd test
was played in Khulna and after winning the toss the home team decided to bat first. Tamim Iqbal scored 109 runs while Shakib Al Hasan scored 137 runs. A little contribution from the others in the team they reached a score of 433 runs. Zimbabwe team replied well in the match scoring 368 runs. Hamilton Masakadza was the star batsmen who scored 158 runs while he was accompanied well by Regis Chakabva who scored 101 runs. Shakib took 5 wickets in the innings. The home team had the lead and they extended it in the 2nd innings scoring 248 runs. Mominul Haque scored 54 runs while Mahmudullah scored 71 runs. The important role was played Shuvagata Hom who came in late to score 50 runs and helped the team in setting up a target of 314 runs. This was a huge ask for the visiting team and hence they failed to do so and ended up scoring 151 runs only. Hamilton Masakadza scored 61 runs and was the only batsman who looked confident. Shakib took 5 wickets in the innings to set up a good win for the team. With this win the home team led the series 2-0.
The 3rd and the final test
of the series were played in Chittagong. Bangladesh after winning the toss decided to bat first and scored a mammoth 503 runs. Tamim Iqbal scored 10 runs while Imrul Kayes scored 130 runs. Shakib in this match scored 71 runs and Rubel Hossain contributed late scoring 45 runs. The Zimbabwe team scored 374 runs in the 1st innings as Sikandar Raza and Hamilton Masakadza provided a good start in the top order. They scored 82 and 81 runs respectively. Regis Chakabva and Elton Chigumbura scored 65 and 88 respectively which helped them in reaching the total. Jubair Hossain took 5 wickets in the innings. Bangladesh started of their 2nd innings with a lead of 130 runs and added 319 runs to set the visitors a target of 449 runs. Tamim scored 65 runs in the 2nd innings while Mominul Haque was the top scorer scoring 131 runs. Zimbabwe needed a great batting display in order to save the test but they failed to do so. Sikandar Raza and Regis were the only batsmen who applied themselves well scoring 65 and 89 runs respectively. The team was able to score only 262 runs. With this win the Bangladesh team scripted a white wash against the Zimbabwe winning the Bashundhara Cement cup 3-0. Shakib was named as the man of the series for his all-round performance.
