Deccan Chargers was one of the teams that used to take part in the Indian Premier League and it was bought by Deccan Chronicle. Deccan Chargers was captained by a legendary Sri Lankan cricketer, Kumara Sangakkara under the coaching head of Darren Lehmann. The club won the IPL title for the first time in 2009 after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 6 runs in Johannesburg.

When Mumbai came out to the middle, they lost some early wickets and ultimately reached a total of 154 runs. Then when Deccan Chargers came out to chase the target, their openers looked in good form and so confident with the bat as they achieved the target in just 12 overs without losing a single wicket. Both the openers performed very well, especially Adam Gilchrist who added 109 runs from 47 balls by hitting nine 4s and ten 6s at a strike rate of 231.91. In the 9th match of the IPL 2008 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on 24 April 2008, Deccan Chargers stood against Rajasthan Royals. After winning the toss, Rajasthan invited the Chargers to bat first and when Deccan Chargers came to the middle, they lost their 2 wickets very quickly. Then Andrew Symonds at the number 4th position handled the situation and added crucial 117 runs from 53 balls that helped them reach a huge total of 214 runs. Despite losing the first wicket very soon at 14 runs, Rajasthan Royals restored the inning quickly and achieved the target in 19.5 overs.
