New Zealand vs South Africa ODI Series 2014 Schedule

The South Africans toured New Zealand for a 3 match ODI series. This tour was scheduled in order to have a good preparation for the upcoming world cup. This series would have helped both the teams understanding the strengths and weakness in the conditions where the cup is scheduled to be held.

The first match of the series was played at the Bay Oval Stadium in Mount Maunganui. In this match the visiting team won the toss and put in New Zealand to bat first. This was a tough challenge for the home team as the South African bowlers are one of the best ones in the world and facing them is always a big challenge. The home team got off to a terrible start in the match. They lost many wickets early in the innings. The team was reduced to a score of 68 runs losing 5 wickets. Luke Ronchi played an outstanding innings of 99 runs which ensured that the team reached a score of 230 runs in the match. Imran Tahir was the best bowler as he gave 37 runs and took 2 wickets from his bowling. The South Africans too didn’t start well and were reduced to 97/4. Later a partnership between AB de Villiers and Jean-Paul Duminy helped them overcome the challenge as they scored 89 and 58 runs respectively thus winning the match in the 49th over of the innings. With this win the visitors led the 3 match series by 1-0.

The 2nd match of the series was played at the same venue as that of the 1st. In this match the home team after winning the toss decided to field first. South Africans while batting first got off to a great start. The top order batsmen gave the team a great start as they reached a score of 235 in 43 overs. Hashim Amla was the top scorer who scored 119 runs while he was accompanied by Faf du Plessis who scored 67 runs in the match. Despite of the great start the middle order failed to perform. The launch pad that was provided was wasted and hence the team was able to score only 282 runs in 50 overs. The home team were in need of a steady batting display in order to win the match and stay alive in the series. Once again the team lost 5 off their wickets under a score of 69. The problems didn’t stop here as the team was reduced to 134 runs losing 9 wickets. Luke Ronchi was once again the lone batsmen in form as he scored 79 runs. The team were able to score only 210 runs. With this win the South Africans registered a win in the series winning it 2-0.

The 3rd and the final ODI
was just a formality as the series winner was already decided. IN this match after winning the toss the New Zealanders again decided to field first. Batting first the team got off to a good start once again as Quinton de Kock scored 80 runs and took his team a score of 157 runs. It was at this time that the weather gods interrupted and heavy rains poured in the ground. This stopped the flow of runs and hence the game ended up without a result.
