Ab de Villiers guide South Africa home in the first ODI - The South Africans started off their World Cup preparations with the tour of New Zealand. In this tour the team was to play only 3 One Day matches. It was seen that the visitors were getting sure that their players will be getting accustomed with the conditions of the country where the match was to be played. The tour started off with the 1st ODI match played at the Bay Oval stadium in Mount Maunganui.

The visitors put New Zealand to bat first after winning the toss. This was quite a decision as the South Africans has some of the best bowlers who can change the course of any match on their own. So did it happen this time around when the bowlers provided their team a perfect start to the match. The home side lost 5 wickets at a score of 68 in 16 overs of the game. Later though Luke Ronchi and Tom Latam tried to tame the bowling as they together took their team to a score of 133 runs. Latham after scoring 29 runs lost his wicket. This opened gates for the visitors and they succeeded in taking some quick wickets restricting the home side to 156/9. Tim Boult held his line and along with Ronchi took his team to 230 runs in 25 overs. It was Ronchi who lost his wicket at a score of 99. Dale Steyn was the most economical bowler giving away runs at 3.9 runs per over.

The South Africans too failed to get a good start as they lost 2 wickets early at a score of 30. Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw took their team to a score of 73 together when Rossouw lost his wicket after scoring 26 runs. Amla lost his wicket after scoring 38 runs. Later AB de Villiers and Jean Paul Duminy took charge and made sure that their team crossed the line comfortably in 50 overs.
