New Zealand emerge victorious in the opening match of the world cup 2015 - The 1st match of the Cricket World Cup 2015 was played between the host country New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The host nations are one of the most favored teams in the tournament looking at the conditions while the Lankans are always known to be a tough contender to beat. In this match after winning the toss Lankans decided to field first.
New Zealand in current form has one of the best batting line-ups and they proved their worth while batting first in the match. Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum together posted a total of 111 runs for the 1st wicket in just 16 overs of the game. McCullum after scoring 65 runs was the 1st one to go bringing in Kane Williamson. Guptill lost his wicket in the 23rd over after scoring 49 runs. Williamson scored 57 runs and lost his wicket in 34th over leaving his team at 193 runs. The very next ball Sri Lanka was able to take the 4th wicket in the form of Ross Taylor. It seemed that the visitors were making their way in the match but Corey Anderson made sure that the team posted a great total in the 1st match scoring 331 runs in 50 overs. Anderson scored 75 runs. No bowler except Rangana Herath was the best bowler from their side in controlling the runs.
Batting second the Lankans had a fairly good start scoring 67 runs for the 1st wicket in 13 overs. Tillakaratne Dilshan after scoring 24 runs lost his wicket to Daniel Vettori. Kumar Sangakkara joined in Lahiru Thirimane but after a small partnership Lahiru lost his wicket after scoring 65 runs. Mahela Jayawardene lost his wicket for duck. It was a major setback for the team and hence they never returned in the game. Sangakkara scored 39 runs and Angelo Mathews scored 46 runs. These were the two batsmen who were able to score runs apart from them the whole team failed and thus they ended their innings at 233 runs thus losing the match by 98 runs.
Corey Anderson was named as the man of the match in the 1st match of the world cup as New Zealand won the first points in Pool A.
