The Indian cricket squad will be engaged in August 2022 in order to contest 3 One-Day Internationals in Zimbabwe. The regulatory body of Indian cricket has already approved this visit in July 2022. The Zimbabwe vs India ODI series 2022 is a key component of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, which is the major route to qualifying for the 50-over World Cup.
Previously planned to take place in 2020, the India tour of Zimbabwe series 2022 was postponed because of an outbreak. The Zim vs Ind ODI series 2022 will contain 3 ODIs which will commence on 18th August at Harare Sports Club, Harare. The same cricket ground in Harare will serve for the 2nd and 3rd ODI on Aug 20, Sat and Aug 22, Mon.
In the place of Rohit Sharma, it is predicted that KL Rahul will play the role of captain under the guidance of Rahul Dravid as a head coach whereas Zimbabwe will enter the tournament under the captaincy of Craig Ervine. It is interesting to note that KL Rahul made his ODI debut as a captain against Zimbabwe in 2016 and Craig Ervine also made his ODI debut as a captain against India in 2010.
The Indian team previously visited Zimbabwe in June-July 2016 to play three ODIs and as many T20Is under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership. In 2016, Indian defeated Zimbabwe in all the three 3 ODIs and won the series by a 3-0 margin. KL Rahul became the highest run maker with 196 runs including an undefeated century and Jasprit Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker with 9 wickets in 3 matches.
Currently, Zimbabwe is sitting at the number 15th position whereas the Indian team is placed at 3rd position in the ICC ODI team ranking. In terms of head-to-head in ODI, both Zimbabwe and India have met in the ODI competition on 63 occasions where ‘The Men in Blue’ achieved victory in 51 matches, and Zimbabwe got success in 10 matches.
Overall, as of July 2022, India has appeared in1005 ODI matches where they successfully achieved victory in 523 and lost 432 matches. On the other hand, Zimbabwe has taken part in 544 ODIs out of which they got victory in 140 and lost 384 matches.
Zimbabwe and India haven't seen each other in any ODI since 2016, therefore this upcoming series will be their first ODI matchup in six years. In the future Zim vs. Ind ODI series in 2022, it would be intriguing to see how Zimbabwe will do and survive against India at home.
