The Pakistan Super League is the T20 cricket tournament which is held by the Pakistan Cricket Board in Pakistan. The tournament was first inaugurated by PCB on 9 September 2015 which included five T20 franchises and now PSL 2022 will be the 7th session that will run from 27 January 2022 to 27 February 2022. The 7th edition of the PSL in 2022 will see a new rule of right-to-match (RTM) cards which will allow each T20 team to purchase back a maximum of one player during the auction.
There will be a total number of 6 T20 franchises who will participate in the tournament and each team will face each other twice as the tournament contains a league stage double round and then the playoff round. The league comprises 35 T20 matches in which 15 matches will be played at the national stadium of Karachi and 19 will be held at the Gaddafi Stadium of Lahore. The PSL 7 will be concluded on 26 February with the Final competition at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
As of 2021, Islamabad United is the most victorious squad in the Pakistan Super League with 2 titles whereas Babar Azam from Karachi Kings is the leading scorer of the PSL with 2070 runs and Wahab Riaz is the most successful bowler with 94 wickets. The 6th edition of the PSL was won by Multan Sultans who defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 47 runs and lifted the title for the first time.
Here are the details of the six clubs that will take part in the 7th edition of PSL in 2022:
- Islamabad United
As the name suggests, Islamabad United represents the Islamabad city of Pakistan, and Leonine Global Sports is the official owner of the squad. Currently, Shadab Khan has the responsibility of captaincy under the guidance of the head coach Azhar Mahmood. The team won the first edition of PSL in 2016 and then again they lifted the trophy 2nd time in 2018.
- Karachi Kings
Karachi Kings stands for Karachi, Sindh in the PSL whose owner is Salman Iqbal, (CEO of ARY Group). Their home ground is the National Stadium located in Karachi. The team will enter the PSL7 under the leadership of Babar Azam with Peter Moores as a head coach.
- Lahore Qalandars
Lahore Qalandars is one of the PSL T20 franchises that represent Lahore. Fawad Rana, the MD of Qatar Lubricants Company, is the owner of the Qalandars. Shaheen Afridi has been named as a captain for PSL 2022 with Aaqib Javed as a head coach.
- Multan Sultans
Multan Sultans, the winner of the last edition (6th edition) PSL 2021, participated in the game under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan with Andy Flower as a head coach. Ali Khan Tareen & Alamgir Khan Tareen is the current owner of the team which was founded in 2017-18.
- Peshawar Zalmi
Javed Afridi, the CEO of Haier Pakistan, has the ownership of Peshawar Zalmi, and the team stands for Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the PSL. Wahab Riaz is the captain of the team whereas Darren Sammy, the former captain of West Indies, is the coach of the Zalmi.
- Quetta Gladiators
Quetta Gladiators stand for Quetta, Balochistan in the T20 PSL under the captaincy of Sarfaraz Ahmed with head coach Moin Khan. Nadeem Omar, the director of Omar Associates, has the ownership of Gladiators.
Broadcasting Rights of PSL 2022
All the T20 matches of the PSL 2022 will be aired on the Sony Six and Sony Ten in India. Sony Pictures Sports Networks India (SPNI) has acquired broadcasting rights for PSL 2022 in India and live streaming will be available on SonyLiv Digital.
In Pakistan, Geo Super and PTV Sports have obtained the telecast rights for PSL 2022.
Prize Money of the PSL 2022
The prize money for the champions of the Pakistan Super League is $500k, the team who will be in the second position will get $ 200k. $76K and $44K are kept for the team at number 3rd and 4th position. The Player of the tournament will get $20K, whereas the man of the match in will receive $40K.
