The cricket governing body of England (England and Wales Cricket Board) has announced that they will welcome New Zealand to play the 3 test matches bilateral series in the month of June 2022. The series will be an integral component of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship. The England vs New Zealand test series 2022 will commence with the first test match at Lord's, London on 2 June 2022. The second test match will be held at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on 10 June 2022, and the last test at Headingley, Leeds on 23 June 2022.
Currently, Joe Root is handling the captaincy of England and most probably leads the team in the upcoming series against New Zealand. On the other hand, Kane Williamson will take the charge and Kiwis will play under his captaincy. Presently, Joe Root is the number 1 test player in the test ranking of ICC whereas Williamson is at the number 3rd position.
England played their first test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne; 15–19 March 1877 whereas New Zealand played their maiden test against England at Lancaster Park, Christchurch; 10–13 January 1930.
New Zealand and England have been big rivals in test cricket since 1930 and played their first series against each other in 1929-30 in New Zealand where England won the series by 1-0. From 1930 to 1978, both the nations played 18 test series and New Zealand got their first triumph against England in the 18th test series. The series was concluded with 1-1 drawn but New Zealand finally got the first victory after 48 years. Finally, New Zealand broke the chain of defeat and won their first test series against England in 1983-84 by 2-1 in New Zealand.
England and New Zealand have faced each other in test matches on 107 occasions in which England won 48 tests, New Zealand got the victory in 12 tests and 47 were drawn. England holds the record of 30 wins at home and New Zealand won 6 test matches at their home ground. So, New Zealand could win only 6 test matches in England since 1930. So, it would be interesting to watch how New Zealand will perform in England at English pitches.
In terms of the scoreboard, New Zealand has added 615 runs on the scoreboard against England as their highest total and England’s highest total is 593, on the other hand, the lowest total of Kiwis is 26 whereas England has bowled out at the total of 58 while playing against each other. New Zealand has never chased the target more than 100 runs and the English team’s highest chase against Kiwis is 304. England’s lowest defending total is 190 whereas New Zealand’s lowest defending total is 202 runs.
