The cricketing team of Auckland is literally the most successful team that plays in the domestic circuit of New Zealand. The team ranks itself in the first position on having won the Plunket Trophy 26 times since the year 1908 till 2009. The team has also won 9 edition of the Ford cup and 3 editions of the HRV cup. The team was actually founded in the year 1873 and played its first ever competitive match against Canterbury that year. The team is the third main team to be created after Canterbury and Otago. The Aces won their first competition in the year 1906 when they beat Canterbury to lift the trophy. Since then the Aces have been the unstoppable force in the domestic circuit of New Zealand cricket.
The year of 1920 to 1930 are often considered to be the Golden years in the history of the Auckland Aces. But the team faced times of struggle after the world war as they had lost a lot of their players in the World War. But the team resurfaced to glory again and won many major tournaments. The team had also participated in the first edition of the Champions League T20. Presently, the Aces is captained by Gareth Hopkins and coached by Matt Horne.
