While bowling at a Pace Australia Camp Johnson, who loves playing tennis more was watched by Dennis who was one of the selectors and quickly put him into U19 team. His first class debut was with Queensland at Gabba Nov 1 2001 which he took 3 wickets and when he entered the ground as last batsman in hit fifth ball he faced with six. September 2006, which was the turning point for John which was the way to show his potentials, and he carried the same form in Champions trophy too. By the end of the series it was so memorable because he took wickets of batting giants such as Tendulkar, Lara and Peitersen. And he too holds the honor that he is the 12th man to play all the 5 ashes test. March 19 the day which was the memorable event after two half centuries including his unbeaten 96 earlier in the same series he took his first test hundred in the series which held at cape town. In a home away series he was the all rounder of the series with 33 wickets in six tests. During the latter year his performance were not so promising for his side to win matches. But still he got a lot of potential to take his home for many more victories for his home side.
