Auckland holds their nerves to win the match by 2 runs - The 2nd match of the Georgie Pie Super Smash Series was played between the Otago and Auckland. This was just the 2nd match of the series and first for these 2 teams. Both the teams were looking to get a good start to the tournament as a good start provides the cushion to perform well in the series. After winning the toss it was Auckland who decided to bat first.

While batting first the Auckland got off to a great start as Martin Guptill and Anaru Kitchen together gave their team a good start of 68 runs. Kitchen was the first one to go after scoring 31 runs he lost his wicket. Colin Munro was the next one to go as he didn’t last long and scored 12 runs. Guptill and Colin de Grandhomme was the player that managed to score some good runs for the team and together took the team to a respectable score of 167 runs. Guptill scored 64 runs and Grandhomme scored 42 runs in the match he remained unbeaten. Nick Beard was the key bowler for the team as he took 2 wickets in the game.

The chase of 167 needed a good start and it was what the top order batsmen from Otago provided their team. Aaron Redmond scored 46 runs in 31 balls and took his team to a score of 69 in 8 overs. This was a start that the team was looking to as it provided them a launch pad to fire. Later Nathan McCullum and Ryan ten Doeschate together built up the innings and ensured that the team had a good chance in the end. McCullum scored 31 runs while Ryan scored 34 runs. The Otago were cruising in the match but the game changed in the end as wickets fell quite easily. The team at the end lost the match by 2 runs. Mitchell McClenaghan managed to scalp 3 wickets. With this win the Auckland started off their campaign with 4 points.
