The cricket governing body of both South Africa and India has shown the green signal for the India tour of South Africa in 2023/24. South Africa will welcome the Indian cricket team in the month of December to contest a South Africa vs India ODI series 2023. The SA vs Ind ODI series 2023 will begin its journey with the first ODI on 17 December at Wanderers Cricket Ground, Johannesburg. The second match of the series was contested on 19 December at St George's Park Cricket Ground, Gqebera. Both nations will move to Boland Park, Paarl in order to play the last match on 21 December.
Rohit Sharma will most possibly take charge of the Indian squad under the coaching of Rahul Dravid. On the other hand, Temba Bavuma will take responsibility as captain for the South African team under the mentorship of Rob Walter as a head coach. Currently, India is in the 3rd position in the ICC ODI team ranking whereas South Africa is holding the 6th position in the list.
The last time India went to South Africa for the ODI series was in 2021/22 when South Africa defeated Team India very badly by 3-0. Quinton de Kock emerged as the leading scorer with 229 runs whereas Andile Phehlukwayo became the leading wicket-taker by taking 6 wickets in that series.
The last time, India won the ODI series against South Africa in South Africa was in 2017/18. In that series, India defeated South Africa by a big margin of 5-1 and Virat Kohli became the top scorer with 558 runs whereas Kuldeep Yadav became the leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets.
In terms of head-to-head in ODI, South Africa and India have met on 90 occasions where South Africa dominated India by winning 50 matches whereas India could achieve victory in 37 matches. Overall, India has appeared in 1,032 ODIs as of August 2023 where they achieved victory in 541 while losing 439 matches. On the other hand, South Africa has contested 654 ODIs where they came out victorious in 399 matches and faced defeat in 228 matches.
So it would be interesting to watch how India will perform to continue its ODI series winning chain.
