The dangerous Steyn and Morkel take their to a test victory - The first test match of the Sri Lanka vs South Africa test series started off in the famous Galle International cricket stadium. The South African side won the toss and decided to bat first.

On Day 1 the opening pair of the team gave them a striking start. The opening pair had a partnership of 70 runs. Alviro Petersen was the first man to go after scoring 34 runs. Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis together controlled the innings pretty well. They stitched together a 100 run partnership. The 2nd wicket of the South African innings fell at the score of 195. Elgar after scoring 103 runs brought in the captain Hashim Amla. After a great two sessions for the visitors the home team made a great comeback in the last session taking 4 wickets. The visitors ended up the day on a score of 268/5.

Day 2 was yet again dominated by the visitors Q de Kock managed to complete his half century before the lunch at 2nd day. He soon got out after scoring his half century. Later Jean-Paul Duminy controlled the South African innings. the visitors finished their 1st innings at a score of 455/9. Dilruwan Perera managed to take 4 wickets in the innings while Suranga Lakmal managed to tale 3 wickets in the innings. The home team came into bat on the 2nd day. The team faced 12 fiery overs and managed to score 30 runs without losing any wicket.

On the 3rd day of the match the home team lost their 1st wicket at the score of 39. Kaushal Silva scored 8 runs before giving away his wicket to fiery Dale Steyn. Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara tried to curb the pressure. They together had a 50 run partnership between them. Sangakkara after scoring 24 runs was bowled by Morne Morkel. Mahela Jayawardene failed yet again as he scored only 3 runs. Dale Steyn took his second wicket in the form of Jayawardene. Tharanga too after scoring 83 lost his wicket to Duminy. Angelo Mathews was the star performer of the day as he scored 89 runs. he was the batsman for the home team who controlled the downfall of the home side. the home team ended the day at the score of 283/9.

The fourth day saw the home side losing their last wicket and thus the Sri Lankan innings ended up at the score of 292 runs. it was a Dale Steyn show once again. He took 5 wickets in the innings and gave the team a great upper hand in the match. the visitors started of their second innings with the lead 164 runs. The second innings was more about scoring quick runs. the opening pair didn’t last long and the first wicket fell at a score of 33 runs. the wicket kept on falling in the second innings regularly. AB de Villiers was the man for South Africa as he scored 51 runs. at the end of tea the visitors declared their innings at a score of 206/6 wickets, thus setting up the score of 370 runs for the home team to chase in the second innings. Dilruwan Perera took 4 wickets in the innings. The home side got a solid start as at the end of day 4 the team was at 110/1. Kumar Sangakkara scored 58 runs and was on crease.

The 5th day promised to be a good one but it was a day which was yet again proved to be ruled by the visitors. The home team lost their overnight player Kaushal Silva at the start of the day. Mahela Jayawardene yet again lost his wicket cheaply leaving his team to a score of 138. Sangakkara too got out leaving his team to a score of 149 runs. he was top scorer in the team scoring 76 runs. as his wicket fell the loss for the home side was eminent. The team ended their innings at a score of 216 runs. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel took 4 wickets each in the innings. Steyn was named as the man of the match for his nine wicket haul in the match. with this win now the South Africans lead the two match series by 1-0.
