Washington Freedom is among the six T20 squads which will take part in the Major Premier League 2023 in America. America Cricket Enterprises play a key role in conducting the MLC, the first-ever T20 professional cricket league in America, with the financial assistance of USA Cricket (USAC). The America Cricket Enterprises established Washington Freedom in 2023 with the purpose of including them as a participating squad in MLC 2023. The Washington Freedom will represent Washington DC, the capital of the USA, in the forthcoming MLC 2023.
The squad has developed a plan to set up George Mason University as its home ground, which is located in Fairfax, Virginia. When it is finished in 2025, this stadium will be able to hold 12,000 spectators and be used to host cricket matches.
Sanjay Govil, a distinguished entrepreneur and forward-thinking pioneer, holds ownership of the Washington Freedom Owner. In February 2023, Major League Cricket made an announcement revealing that Govil had formed a partnership with Cricket New South Wales. The purpose of this collaboration is to expedite the expansion of the franchise based in Washington, D.C.
Washington Freedom has chosen Moises Henriques as their captain for the upcoming Major Premier League 2023. The Washington Freedom franchise has selected Greg Shipperd, the former Australian cricketer and coach, for the position of head coach. On the other hand, Dale Steyn will play the role of the bowling coach for Washington Freedom. The franchise has included three USA players named Sujith Gowda, Saurabh Netravalkar, and Akhilesh Bodugum. Washington Freedom has got an excellent collection of international players like Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka, Moises Henriques, Ben Dwarshuis, and Josh Philippe from Australia. Josh Philippe is taken as a wicketkeeper batter whereas Ben Dwarshuis will handle the bowling department. Additionally, Washington has also included South African pace bowler Anrich Nortje, and New Zealand right-arm seamer Adam Milne. Glenn Phillips from New Zealand is also added along with Philippe as a wicketkeeper-batter.
The Washington Freedom squad will start their journey in MLC on 14 July 2023 by playing their first T20 against Seattle Orcas at Grand Prairie Stadium, Texas. On 16 July 2023, they will face Texas Super Kings in the 2nd T20 in the same venue. Afterward, they will head over to Church Street Park, Morrisville in order to play their 3rd T20 against Los Angeles Knight Riders on 20 July. Then the squad will face San Francisco Unicorns on 22 July in their 4th match on the same ground and the last match will be held against MI New York on 23 July in the same stadium.
