South Africa lucky to escape a test defeat against Sri Lanka - After the first test match loss against the South Africans the home side Sri Lanka were looking to level the 2 match test series with a win in the SSC Colombo cricket stadium. The win was even more important as Mahela Jayawardene recently announced his retirement from test arena. The match started off with Sri Lanka winning the toss and deciding to bat first.

Day 1 saw a strong start from the Sri Lankans. They ended the day at a strong score of 305/5. The end was better than the start as the home side didn’t had a good start losing 2 early wickets in the match. The most important wicket was the one of Kumar Sangakkara. He failed to score a single run in this innings. Kaushal Silva and Mahela Jayawardene together put up a great show as the team recovered from 16/2 to 115/3. Silva lost his wicket after scoring 44 runs. Later Mathews joined Jayawardene and took his team to score of 246 before losing his wicket. He scored 63 runs. Jayawardene too completed hi century on the day and was still present on the crease at stumps.

Day 2 started good for the visitors as they got the wicket of Jayawardene. He got out after scoring 165 runs. It seemed that the doors are opened for the visitors but Niroshan Dickwella provided some late resistance scoring 72 runs. The Sri Lanka ended their innings at 421 runs. Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Jean-Paul Duminy took 2 wickets each. The South Africa’s first innings started off pretty poor. Just before tea the team lost 2 wickets. Later, Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla came as a saviour for the day. The visitors ended the day at 93/3. Du Plessis lost his wicket after scoring 36 runs.

At lunch day 3 the visitors fought bravely. Most of the runs were scored by Hashim Amla but in the process they lost 2 more wickets. the team stood at 163/5. Hashim Amla in the second session of the day scored his century. at Tea on day 3 the team was standing at 234/7 and soon after tea the home side was able to bowl them out. the visitors scored only 282 runs in the 1st innings with Amla unbeaten at 139. Rangana Herath took 4 wickets for his team. the Sri Lankans had a conscious start and ended the day at 11/0.

From the start of Day 4 the home side looked aggressive in their approach. They had a huge lead in their back and were looking to bat the visitors out of the match by scoring some quick runs. Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews played a great role in the 2nd innings. Sangakkara top scored with 72 runs while Mathews was unbeaten at 63. The team ended their innings at 229. Morne Morkel took 4 wickets in the innings. The South Africans practically had the option of saving the test rather than winning it. But they ended the day at 38/1.

On the last day of the game the home side needed 9 wickets while the visitors needed to survive the day. The first session rain interruption helped the visitors as match was delayed. At lunch on day 5 the team was at 55/2. It seemed that if more rains occur the match will end up as a draw. The game resumed after lunch and yet again it was a session shared by both the teams as Africans survive yet another session losing only 2 wickets. At tea the team was at 104/4. The match changed in the last session as it included rain interruptions, quick fall of wickets. In the final stages it seemed that the Lankans will make merry but the tail wagged for the visitors and the test was saved as the 2nd innings of South Africa ended up at 159/8. Rangana Herath took 5 wickets in the innings.

With the draw South Africa won the series by 1-0. Mahela Jayawardene was elected as the man of the match.
